"All aboard!" ... STEEL & WOOD is a Bluegrass band based in Petoskey, Michigan. We offer heartfelt, traditional music with roots emanating from Southern Appalachia and harkening back to American railroad culture. We have developed a repertoire spanning the works of Bill Monroe, Ralph Stanley, Jim and Jesse McReynolds, and many others.
In December 2019, we completed an enjoyable and eventful 5 year run of sharing the music we love, with STEEL & WOOD members John A. Neiswander, Irene Kazmers, Bruce Walker and John Hussey. This is a period of time we'll never forget, with remembrance of many musical high points and performance experiences along the way.
2020 STEEL & WOOD members, in addition to John A. Neiswander on lead guitar and vocals and Irene Kazmers on fiddle, guitar and vocals, included stellar musicians Bud Vanderberg on dobro and pedal steel guitar, and Kathy Tuinhoff on upright bass. We are fortunate that Sandy and Dale Rhea on acoustic bass and guitar/vocals, respectively, joined in with us, as well. Shout out to Collins Pardee of "Single Finger Sound" for great sound reinforcement.
2021 y'all! - The pandemic has put a damper on live performance, particularly indoors. Let's hope things improve as this year unfolds, so we can all get back on the track!
Our CD, "ALONG THE TRACK", consisting of 16 "first take" traditional Bluegrass recordings, was reviewed:
“...So credit STEEL & WOOD with conveying these songs with the authenticity and awareness that make for essential elements in this rootsy regimen. ALONG THE TRACK is a textbook lesson in both credence and conviction.”
- Lee Zimmerman, BLUEGRASS TODAY (3/26/19 issue)
